EU Directives For Valves (CPD Certified)

Course Brief

1-day course designed to give an overview of what is involved in achieving compliance with the most significant directives and regulations in the valve industry.

The BVAA Course on Directives (PED, ATEX, MD)

If you export to the EU or EEA, it is still a legal requirement to comply with EU directives. The intention behind the directives is to ensure that:  

• barriers to trade are removed and a free and open market is created
• products within the scope are safe

If you comply with the Directives, you will have a good basis for complying with the UK requirements and UKCA marking. The similarities and differences will be highlighted.

The course considers three directives:

1. Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) - the most important directive for valve manufacturers. This directive is concerned with the risks due to the internal pressure. The course reviews what the requirements are and how to address them. The impact of the latest revision 2014/68/EU is considered.
2. The ATEX (ATmospheres EXplosive) Directive - which deals with equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres. While this is often considered to be for electrical equipment only, sparks can also be generated by mechanical equipment too. The course considers the mechanical aspects of potential ignition sources only.
3. The Machinery Directive is mentioned briefly. Whether valves and actuators are machines, the implications of this and how to fulfil requirements are considered.

Ron Strang has a background of over 40 years in the valve industry and has wide and extensive knowledge of all processes involved in the design, manufacture and inspection of industrial valves. Ron is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

He has been involved in the implementation and execution of directive compliance at a high level since their introduction at several valve companies as a technical director.
