Course Brief

This 1-day course is designed as an introduction to the subject of valves and valve technology. It also covers issues relating to materials, performance, safety and the environment.

Course Objectives

  • Achieve a thorough grasp of the basic principles of valves, their terminology, selection, installation and use.
  • Gain an understanding of the construction of the many different valve types, the materials involved and basic standards.
  • Understand how valves are operated and the basics of actuation.
  • The opportunity to discuss and clarify any specific valve problems or issues.

Who Should Attend

This course is aimed at all individuals who have limited knowledge of valves or who wish to gain a broader perspective of their use. It is suitable for staff in a wide range of functions from sales through engineering, procurement, manufacturing and site operation and maintenance. It is also suitable for engineers and technicians who wish to re-introduce themselves to the subject.

Course Presenter

Course presenter Peter Dix is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. He has over thirty years’ experience in the valve industry, working as a Technical Director and General Manager for some of the industry’s biggest companies including IMI, Dresser, Tyco, Alco and Kent Introl. He is currently working as a consultant to the valve industry, and as BVAA’s principal technical consultant and leading lecturer.

Peter Dix is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. He has over thirty years' experience in the valve industry, working as a Technical Director and General Manager for some of the industry's biggest companies including IMI, Dresser, Tyco, Alco and Kent Introl.

Peter is the Chairman of BSI's technical committees on valves, and the UK's representative to international standards organisations. He is hugely experienced in the design and manufacture of gate, globe, check, quarter-turn, safety-relief and control valves. Peter has devised PED compliant systems and worked with the PED since its inception.

Classroom based training

Our one-day classroom-based courses will follow a similar format:

  • Offices open from 8.30am onwards
  • The course will start at 9.00am prompt
  • There will be a break for lunch, usually 12.30pm - 1.00pm
  • Each course will finish at 5.00pm at the latest

We provide a buffet lunch and would be grateful if you could inform us if you have any dietary restrictions or preferences on booking.

Full notes and course materials are supplied. Delegates will also receive a BVAA Manual specific to the course they attend.

Accessibility

Our training facility is on the first floor, with no wheelchair access. On both the ground floor and first floor we have an accessible toilet.
